Figures & Fantasies

Moonlit Woman (2007).

Aurora's Angel

2008

14 x 20

This painting was inspired by a watercolor of an angel by Karen Haughey. I wanted to paint a similar design for my little granddaughter, Aurora, for Christmas; something spiritual rather than religious.

Blue Sun Dress

2008

10.5 x 14.75

This painting was inspired by a magazine photograph of a couple strolling on a summer day. The woman appeared to be sweetly sashaying down a path with someone she loves.

Coffee Cup On Table

2008

11.5 x 15

This is one of a series of paintings of legs. I have fun photographing all kinds of legs, of all ages, shapes, lengths; sitting, walking, posing. Painting legs makes me smile.

Dressing Room

2008

15 x 22

This is another painting from my “leg series.” This one was taken from a photograph in a catalog. I liked the model’s pose and added a curtain and wooden floor for emphasis.

Girl in Canoe

2006

10.5 x 13.5

This painting is a self-portrait, reminiscent of a time when I canoed on freshwater lakes in northern Wisconsin, near the town of Eagle River. The hills are imaginary, as that part of the State is mostly flatland and lakes.

Lady At Window

2008

11.25 x 15

This painting is a taken from a magazine article I had cut out years ago. I added the window, trees, and hairstyle to create a more personal vision.

Man in Jeans

2007

10.5 x 14.5

This painting is from a charcoal sketch I made of a young man modeling in a drawing class. I tried to capture the ruggedness of his appearance and of his muscular form. The stained jeans accent the mood of the setting.

Man With Cane

2008

10.5 x 14.75

I don’t recall the exact inspiration for this painting; just my interpretation of the scene. I tried to capture the laboring of the old man’s pace without forfeiting his joyful walk.

Moonlit Woman

2007

10.5 x 14.25

The woman in this painting inspires me with serenity and her presence in the moment. There is also inspiration in her surroundings, which may be a small lake lined with conifers in the high Cascades of western Oregon. The moon sheds a light that is both feminine and calm. I tried to portray wisdom with this painting, in the combination of presence, setting, and lighting, and to share my feelins of inspiration in the attempt.

Nude Model

2005

11.25 x 15

I painted this model during a life drawing session. I had fun using different brush strokes with the way I laid down color, for a more impressionistic result.

Ocean Breeze

2008

10.5 x 14.75

A warm breeze on a sunny day at the beach is healing and serene. The expansive vista moves me into the present moment and I can feel the sand beneath my feet

Powerlessness

2007

12.25 x 16

I was motivated to paint an image of myself at a time when my life seemed to have spun out of control. There were not any options to resolve the events in my life, but to surrender. Eventually, life has a way of providing relief and serenity.

Red Heels

2008

11 x 15

This is a painting of my own legs, made from a mirror image in my studio. The skirt and red shoes are imaginary, and intended to appear alluring. There is no story – that is for your imagination.

Sunday Morning At The Beanery

2008

15 x 22

This painting is from a photograph I took at a local coffee house on a Sunday morning. The man is engaged in reading the morning newspaper while enjoying a hot cup of coffee.

The Gift

2008

11 x 15

This painting of an angel holds a newborn baby in her arms. My thought in painting this was to create an angel representing the spiritual life of an infant. Her wings enfold and protect the child and remind us that children are our greatest gifts. The title came to me because I had recently became a grandmother again, of twins. All of my grandchildren are gifts of innocence and love.

Thy Will, Not Mine

2008

14.5 x 22.5

This was painted as a Christmas gift to my grandson, Adam. It is based on an original design by artist unknown to me. The subject was a choice made by my son and his wife.

Waiting

2008

14.25 x 20

Many times, I have found myself sitting and waiting for someone or something and alone with my thoughts. Waiting can be a welcome time to reflect, rather than be impatient. Sometimes, legs tell the story.

Yellow Skirt

2008

11 x 15.5

This is one of my “leg series” paintings. It was inspired by a photograph of a young girl swirling around a dance floor.

Young Girl By Creek

2008

7 x 10.5

Painting children is a challenge for me. This is a painting of a young lady from a photograph I took in Alton Baker Park in Eugene, Oregon. She seemed to be testing the water’s temperature, or maybe looking at her own reflection on its surface.
